On Friday March 3rd, ESBCHS teaching and support staff will be participating in a number of professional development activities that are in alignment with our School and Division Goals.

Numerous ESBCHS staff members will be participating in Division organized PD sessions held at a variety of schools within Black Gold as well as some specific teaching practice and department focused activities taking place in our school.  

These activities include, but are not limited to the following topics:

  • Understanding Histories, Cultures and Worldviews of Alberta’s First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples
  • Social Media Strategies for Schools
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder 101
  • High School Secretary Round Table
  • Developing and Supporting a Strategic Reader (for education assistants)
  • Math Diploma Exams: Style and Structure
  • Grade 9 – 12 Math Item Writing
  • What is PowerTeacher Pro?
  • Google for Education Assistants
  • Curling for PE Teachers
  • An EA’s Guide to Google Apps
  • More than Just a bad Day: Understanding and Supporting Students Who Experience Depression

  • Common assessment practices; Social Studies written responses

School based PD Day

PD Goal:    

To explore the impact of cell phones and social media on social interactions between students and identify ways to promote face to face conversations between teachers and students and foster conversations among students.

To continue collaborative work within departments and among teachers to enhance the delivery of our curricular programs in line with the annual school and department goals established at the start of the year.

PD Activities

Viewing and discussion of the research of Sherry Turkle.  Applying this research and discussion points to teacher growth plans and teaching practices.  Department leaders and guest speakers to work with each department to facilitate the application and achievement of department goals ranging from resource development and sharing, assessment practices, development of rubrics and lesson planning.

Success Indicators

Increased staff collaboration targeted toward increasing current curriculum alignment in planning, teaching and assessment practices across all subjects.

Improved community of practice support among teachers to enhance student achievement.

Improved results in the area of ESBCHS being a safe and caring school.

Combination of Division, School-based and Professional Learning Community (PLC) Professional Development Day

PD Goal:

Provide meaningful opportunities for teachers and support staff to work individually and collectively to enhance their instructional practice with the goal of impacting student achievement.

To promote and support professional learning communities within our school to continue to improve our overall school climate for staff and students alike, resulting in keeping ESBCHS a safe and caring school.

PD Activities: will take place in a variety of locations across the district.

ESBCHS teachers and support staff will be working in a variety of areas to support their professional growth, to enhance teaching practices, and to impact student achievement. Departments will be engaged in Professional Learning Communities working together to implement the strategies they identified to achieve their respective goals. Activities include, but are not limited to: Noodletools, research skills development, development and alignment of numeric response questions, critical/analytical response enhancement, Google classroom, IPPs, Violence and Threat Risk Assessment refresher,data collection, analysis of writing exemplars, FNMI research etc.

BGRS Division-based professional development is also provided for all Support Staff including Secretaries, Library Clerks and Technicians, Accounting Technicians, Education Assistants, Beauty Culture Technicians, Educational Transliterators, and LPNs.  Sessions include but are not limited to various appropriate Google Apps training, First Aid, Autism training,

Afternoon:

  1. Hour Zero Emergency Procedures Workshop
  2. Department Planning and Goal Setting:
    • School-wide staff discussions  on department goals and strategies to achieve them for the school year to enhance teaching practices and student achievement
    • Departments include English, Social Studies, Math, Science, Second Languages, Phys Ed, CTS and Student Services
    • Discussions may centre around but are not limited to Diploma Exam and PAT results, instructional practices, development of common assessments, evaluation rubrics.
