Drama & Musical Theatre
Drama does more than teach performance skills. It shapes resilient, empathetic, creative young people who are prepared not only for the stage, but for life.
We believe drama transforms students. Through creative risk-taking and disciplined practice, students develop focus, self-control, and the confidence to stand in front of others with clarity and purpose. They learn to think imaginatively, respond thoughtfully, and collaborate generously.
In our rehearsal spaces, students form meaningful connections. They learn to listen deeply, communicate effectively, and support one another in pursuit of shared artistic goals. Here, mistakes become opportunities, challenges become growth, and every student has a place — whether performing, directing, designing, or building.
The Drama Department is a place where courage is practiced, voices are discovered, and stories are brought to life.
Drama 10 (3 credits) *Course fee
Drama 10 is an introductory course designed to build ensemble, confidence, and foundational performance skills. Students begin by getting to know one another and establishing a safe, supportive learning environment through play-based activities and collaborative exercises. The course then moves into spontaneous improvisation, theatrical genres and a short Directing unit. The course also includes many creative performance projects such as Airbands, encouraging collaboration and expressive performance.
Completion of Drama 10 fosters self-confidence, concentration, creativity, and a strong sense of ensemble. This course is a prerequisite for Drama 20 and 30 as well as Musical Theatre, which is available to Grade 11 and 12 students only.
Drama 20 (5 credits) *Course fee
Prerequisite: 50% in Drama 10
As students enter their second year in the program, Drama 20 builds on the foundational skills developed in Drama 10. Students will review and strengthen the disciplines of orientation and improvisation, with a continued emphasis on focus, commitment, and ensemble work. In addition, Drama 20 students will work together as a class to rehearse and stage a one-act play. Through this process, students will experience the full rehearsal journey — from script analysis and character development to blocking, refinement, and performance. This collaborative production deepens their understanding of acting, teamwork, and theatrical storytelling, while challenging them to elevate their performance skills to a new level.
Drama 20 strengthens artistic discipline, creative problem-solving, and ensemble responsibility as students continue to grow both as performers and collaborators.
Drama 30 (5 credits) *Course fee
Prerequisite: 50% in Drama 20
Drama 30 represents the culmination of a student’s senior high drama experience. In this final year, students refine and elevate all previously learned disciplines — orientation, voice, movement, improvisation, character development, and directing — with increased independence, focus, and artistic maturity.
The primary focus of Drama 30 is the study, rehearsal, and performance of **two one-act plays**. These works are selected for their greater complexity and more mature themes, challenging students to engage in deeper script analysis, nuanced character work, and sophisticated staging. The rehearsal process mirrors post-secondary and professional theatre expectations, demanding commitment, collaboration, and critical reflection. Students take active leadership roles within the production process, contributing to interpretation, staging, and artistic decision-making. This course is designed to serve as strong preparation for those considering further study in theatre arts or related performance programs, while also providing a rigorous and meaningful capstone experience for all participants.
Drama 30 develops discipline, artistic voice, and the confidence required to transition from high school theatre into advanced training or performance environments.
Improvisational Theatre
Improvisational Theatre 25
Prerequisite: Drama 10 *Course fee
Improv is unique in that if you see a performance, that’s it… there will never be another show exactly like it ever done again. Improv is different every time. The emphasis of this course is to provide the basic skills of improvisation: listening, clarity, confidence and performing instinctively and spontaneously. Students will experience performing improvisational scenes individually, in pairs and as part of an ensemble for an audience. Improv is the practice of acting, singing, talking and reacting, of making and creating, in the moment and in response to the stimulus of one's immediate environment, fellow actors and inner thoughts. Open to Grade 11 & 12 students only. *Course fee required.
