Speech and Debate
Speech and Debate 15 is a 3 credit course that is open to grade 10–12 students. A key feature of this course is that many of the topics explored will be based on student interests and choices, allowing students to investigate issues they find engaging and meaningful.
The course introduces students to the fundamentals of effective communication, critical thinking, and public speaking. Students explore the foundational elements of effective speech.The class involves a variety of formats and structures to develop effective and confident speaking skills. In class, students will engage in small-group Socratic discussions and formal debates while undertaking research on a wide range of social and current issues.
This course develops students’ ability to synthesize complex information, articulate ideas persuasively, and engage responsibly as informed citizens. Students have the possibility of continuing on to earn credits in Speech and Debate 25 and 35 in other semesters.
